FAQ
I know where Columbus Circle is but exactly what is in the Cathedral Square neighborhood?
Cathedral Square is the centerpiece of downtown Syracuse and the “ne
west” oldest neighborhood in the city. It is home to five houses of worship, the center of arts and culture including the Onondaga Historical Association, the Everson Museum, and the Syracuse Symphony and Opera; the seat of county government, including Onondaga County Office Building, the Civic Center, the copper-domed Beaux Arts Courthouse, the YMCA and other key community services including the Amaus Health Services, Samaritan Center; the Central New York seat for both the Roman Catholic and Episcopal Dioceses, as well as other historic buildings such as the Carnegie building, the former University Club and the former Cathedral School and Convent.
What is the shared vision for the neighborhood?
Even though Cathedral Square serves as a destination for thousands of people everyday it has within it buildings that are under-utilized or vacant and could be leveraged through strategic re-thinking of what this neighborhood could be.
Why focus on community development downtown? Isn’t the downtown something we cannot revive?
Au contraire! As more and more people realize the benefits of living in the city center the market for rental apartments, grocery and book stores, restaurants, and satellite locations for institutions of higher education is growing, and it is essential that we chart a course together to strengthen and nurture one of the loveliest streetscapes in Syracuse.
What is the Cathedral Square Neighborhood Association?
